WHAT IS A PUBLIC ADJUSTER ?
A Public Adjuster is a professional insurance adjuster that represnts the interest of the policyholder, not the insurance company. In California, Public Adjusters must be licensed by the California Department of Insurance and bonded in order to represent a policyholder. They must pass a state examination and take continuing education courses on insurance regulation, coverage, ethics, and claim handling.
A policyholder may choose to hire a licensed Public Adjuster to assist in the preparation, documentation, and negotiation of their insurance claim.
SHOULD I LET MY INSURANCE COMPANY HANDLE MY CLAIM?
The adjuster sent by your insurance company does not represent you, he or she represents the insurance company exclusively. Nowhere in your insurance policy does it state that your insurance company is obligated to provide you an adjuster. In fact the policy clearly states that it is YOUR responsibility to present a claim to your insurance company.
